How to Prepare Furniture for Moving Day

Your furniture is one of the most valuable things you own — and one of the hardest things to move without damage. A little preparation before moving day goes a long way toward protecting your pieces and making the move faster. Here's what to do.

1. Empty Cabinets and Shelves — Clothes Can Stay in the Dresser

Start with cabinets, shelves, and desk drawers: remove anything loose, breakable, or valuable before moving day. Loose items can shift during transport, drawers can slide open, and heavy contents make furniture harder to carry safely.

Dressers are the exception — with Husky Haulers, you don't have to empty them. Soft items like clothing can stay right in the drawers, and our crew will wrap and secure the dresser so nothing shifts or slides open in transit. Prefer to empty it anyway? That works too — wardrobe boxes make quick work of hanging clothes, and lighter furniture is always easier to maneuver in tight spaces.

2. Disassemble What You Can

Bed frames, dining tables, bookshelves, and some desks are much easier to move when broken down. Disassembly reduces the risk of damage to the furniture and to your walls and doorframes during transport.

Keep all hardware (screws, bolts, Allen keys) in a labeled zip-lock bag taped to the furniture piece. This makes reassembly much faster.

The one thing we don't do is completely dismantle a piece down to its individual components and rebuild it from scratch (as some flat-pack furniture would require) — but standard breakdown and reassembly is always covered.

3. Protect Glass and Mirrors

Glass tabletops, mirror panels, and glass cabinet doors should be removed and wrapped separately. Use moving blankets, bubble wrap, or cardboard to protect glass surfaces. Mark them clearly as fragile.

If you have a glass dining table or a large mirror, let your movers know in advance so they can bring the right materials and plan for careful handling.

4. Wrap Upholstered Furniture

Sofas, chairs, and mattresses can pick up dirt, tears, and moisture during a move if left unprotected. If you're doing any self-packing, plastic sofa covers and mattress bags are inexpensive and worth the investment.

5. Secure Loose Parts

Doors on entertainment centers, hutches, and armoires can swing open during a move and cause damage. Use painter's tape or moving straps to secure doors closed. Remove and pack any loose shelves separately.

6. Clear a Path

Before the crew arrives, clear a path from each piece of furniture to the front door. Move rugs, small tables, and anything else that could be a tripping hazard. The faster the crew can move through your home, the less time the move takes.

7. Photograph Your Furniture Before the Move

Take photos of your furniture before moving day — especially any pieces with existing scratches, dents, or wear. This gives you a clear record of the condition before the move, which is useful if you ever need to reference it.
